Vladimir Putin is the President of Russia. He has been in power since 1999, and is one of the most powerful leaders in the world.
Putin was born in Leningrad, Russia, in 1952. He studied law at Leningrad State University, and then worked as a KGB officer. In 1991, he was appointed mayor of St. Petersburg. He became President of Russia in 1999, and has been re-elected four times.
Putin is a controversial figure. He has been accused of authoritarianism, corruption, and human rights abuses. However, he is also popular in Russia, where he is seen as a strong leader who has restored Russia to its former glory.
Early life and KGB career
Vladimir Putin was born on October 7, 1952, in Leningrad, Russian SFSR, Soviet Union (present-day Saint Petersburg, Russia). His father, Vladimir Spiridonovich Putin, was a factory foreman, and his mother, Maria Ivanovna Putina, was a factory worker. Putin has two older brothers, Viktor and Albert. Viktor died in infancy, and Albert died in a car accident in 1998.
Putin grew up in a communal apartment, sharing a kitchen and bathroom with other families. He has described his childhood as "very modest." He attended School No. 193 in Leningrad, where he was a good student. He was also a keen sportsman, and played ice hockey and football.
In 1970, Putin graduated from high school and enrolled in the law faculty of Leningrad State University. He graduated in 1975 with a degree in law.
After graduating from university, Putin worked for the KGB, the Soviet secret police. He served in the KGB for 15 years, rising to the rank of lieutenant colonel. He was stationed in Dresden, East Germany, for five years.
Mayor of St. Petersburg
In 1990, Putin left the KGB and entered politics. He was elected to the Leningrad City Council, and served as chairman of the city council from 1991 to 1996.
In 1996, Putin was appointed mayor of St. Petersburg by President Boris Yeltsin. He served as mayor until 1999, when he was appointed Prime Minister of Russia.
As mayor of St. Petersburg, Putin implemented a number of reforms, including the of a new tax system and the creation of a new police force. He also worked to improve the city's infrastructure and economy.
Putin was a popular mayor, and his approval ratings remained high throughout his time in office.
Prime Minister of Russia
In 1999, Putin was appointed Prime Minister of Russia by President Boris Yeltsin. He served as Prime Minister until 2000, when he was elected President of Russia.
As Prime Minister, Putin oversaw the implementation of a number of economic reforms, including the of a flat tax and the reduction of government spending. He also worked to improve relations with Russia's neighbors.
