Chess, a game of strategy and intellect, has captivated minds for centuries. Whether you're a novice seeking to grasp the basics or an experienced player striving to refine your skills, this comprehensive guide will provide you with everything you need to know about playing chess.

Chess is played on an 8x8 checkered board, with alternating light and dark squares. The board is initially set up with each player having 16 pieces: one king, one queen, two rooks, two knights, two bishops, and eight pawns.

Each type of chess piece moves in a unique way:

  • King: Moves one square in any direction (horizontal, vertical, or diagonal).
  • Queen: The most powerful piece, moves any number of squares along a rank (row),file (column),or diagonal.
  • Rook: Moves any number of squares along a rank or file.
  • Bishop: Moves any number of squares diagonally, staying on the same color.
  • Knight: Moves in an "L" pattern - two squares in one direction and then one square perpendicularly.
  • Pawn: Moves one square forward, except for its initial move where it can move two squares. Captures diagonally forward.

The board is set up as follows, with each player's pieces on the two rows closest to them:

  • First rank (for both players): Rooks on the corners, knights next to them, bishops beside the knights, queen on its own color (white queen on white square, black queen on black square),and the king next to the queen.
  • Second rank (for both players): All eight pawns.

Players take turns moving one piece at a time, alternating between white and black. Players cannot move into a square occupied by their own piece, but they can capture an opponent's piece by moving into its square.

When a player's king is under immediate threat of capture (check),the player in check must make a move to remove the threat. This can be done by moving the king, blocking the attacking piece, or capturing the attacking piece.

If a player in check has no legal moves to escape, the game is over and the other player has won by checkmate.

If a player is not in check but has no legal moves, the game ends in a draw by stalemate.

A special move involving the king and one of the rooks, where the king moves two squares towards a rook, which then hops over the king. Castling can only occur under specific conditions.

A special pawn capture that can occur under specific conditions, where a pawn captures an opponent's pawn that has just moved two squares forward from its starting position.
