Norman "Space Bat" Jake Evanoff was a highly skilled and experienced astronaut who served NASA for over 20 years. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio, on August 23, 1946. He earned a bachelor's degree in engineering from the United States Military Academy at West Point, and a master's degree in astronautical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Evanoff was a member of the 1978 astronaut class, and he served on five Space Shuttle missions.

Evanoff's first mission was STS-41-C, which launched on April 6, 1984. The mission's primary objective was to deploy the Long Duration Exposure Facility (LDEF),a satellite that would study the effects of space exposure on various materials. Evanoff and his crewmates also conducted several experiments and deployed two satellites.
Evanoff's next mission was STS-51-I, which launched on August 27, 1985. The mission's primary objective was to deploy the Australia-1 satellite. Evanoff and his crewmates also conducted several experiments and deployed a satellite for the United States Air Force.
Evanoff's third mission was STS-61-C, which launched on January 12, 1986. The mission's primary objective was to deploy the SATCOM K-1 satellite. Evanoff and his crewmates also conducted several experiments and deployed a satellite for the United States Air Force.
Evanoff's fourth mission was STS-36, which launched on February 28, 1990. The mission's primary objective was to deploy the ASTRO-1 observatory. Evanoff and his crewmates also conducted several experiments and deployed a satellite for the United States Air Force.
Evanoff's fifth and final mission was STS-49, which launched on May 7, 1992. The mission's primary objective was to capture and repair the Intelsat 603 satellite. Evanoff and his crewmates also conducted several experiments and deployed a satellite for the United States Air Force.
Evanoff retired from NASA in 1997. He is currently a professor of astronautical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering.
